Casting Part I – Bali masks

Returning from taking a class with Jacqueline Spiro’s sand casting workshop at Pilchuck, I got inspired to create some castings in my own shop. We pulled out some masks that came from our last visit to Bali, some of the molds I’ve been working on with Pele’s face and the Buddha and we all set up in an informal yet really fun experimental adventure.

It was a major shift in the techniques that we usually work with in the studio, and all of us became fascinated with the process and the potentials of what we could do.

This process was enthralling and beautiful in itself. The positive and negative spaces, the team work that it required, the different and much higher temperatures the glass needed to be. All the nuances were so exciting to experience.
