The Kalapana Kai Wave VASE

The Kalapana Kai Wave vase sculpture features the ocean waves of Kalapana. KAI means OCEAN in the Hawaiian language. Living along this coastline and observing the water’s constant ferocious motion sets the stage for our inspiration.

Kalapana was one beautiful old Hawaiian village on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii . In 1990, lava from Kilauea volcano engulfed Kalapana. Most of the town was buried under 30+ feet of lava, destroying Hawaiia’s oldest heiau (temple), two subdivisions and several miles of public highway. No lives were lost, but 182 homes were swallowed by lava. This is Kilauea’s story, one of destruction and creation.

Today, there is an entirely new coastline, known by its dramatic ocean waters and its delightful full range of BLUE hues.
